A note to Mommy

Posted on September 23, 2010. Filed under: What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

I can’t resist. Here was the morning note I got from MB (via text from TB). Enough to make me smile all day.

Dear Momma,

We buy donuts, chocolate donuts from the store. We’re sorry mommy. You know those white ones we get sometimes, we got chocolate ones. We’re sorry.  (I am not sure what she is sorry for…the fact she is eating donuts, or that she got a different kind then we sometimes get.)

The pumkin growed big and the sun flower is not very big except its tiny. (these are the seeds she got as a gift from family friend and have grown better than any plant kits we have used before)

We love you. Watch out for gators.  (those would be my Florida Gators!)

Here is the photo that went with the note.

Love my munch-kin!

Sometimes going away is a good thing

Posted on September 22, 2010. Filed under: What he said, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I hate leaving my family. No matter what fun might lie ahead I always miss them. You might have a night or a part of time when you enjoy being a girl on the town, but at the end of the night it is always so much better to be under your own roof when the family all there with you.

However, without going away I wouldn’t feel so much love as I do right now.

I am sitting in a meeting and my phone vibrates. I look down and there is a picture of my two lovebugs beaming at the camera. All smiles which makes me smile. Then I notice the splash pad behind them and a backdrop I don’t recognize. They are someplace new….I of course want all the details but I am in a meeting.

I come back to my hotel and see some Facebook updates from TB…here they are:

‎”I think this might be a good day to smell the breeze, look around, and just have some fun.” 🙂

“I want surf champion for dinner; I want surf champion”. Took me a minute to realize she meant surf and turf. I corrected her, and she was all, “Yeah, THAT’S what I mean”.
Check that. I guess it was “surf boarding champion” she was saying. She just reverted back to that, followed by PLEASE I want some lobster.
I just smile and my heart melts. I wish I was there with them…but then I know it would have been just a normal Monday night. They are making their own memories, they are doing what best buddies too.
Sometimes going away is a good thing…

First soccer practice of the season

Posted on September 21, 2010. Filed under: Capture the moment, Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Well we have another hit. This girl just loves it all. We are going to have to start being pickier…I think we have hit our limit on activities.

So we headed out this weekend for MB’s first soccer practice and game of the season. It was 110 degrees and hot. TB and I managed to sweat more than you can imagine and end up with our first burn of the season, yes right when summer is over.

We love the soccer club though. The coach was great, really worked the kids with drills and fundamentals. Plenty of water breaks. Which were so cute. TB would hold up the towel and I would hold up the water- MB would run to us and grab the towel as she ran around our chairs and come up on the other side to get the water. She was in full spirit of the game.

After about 40min of practice they started their game. No goalies for this league and they did 6 on 6 and then 4 on 4 and 3 on 3. MB had the ringer on her team and he quickly scored the first goal. TB and I were both really surprised to see out right in the middle of the action MB was. She was right in their pushing and kicking and going after the ball.

She scored the 2nd goal and it was her first. Talk about a confidence builder. She was so bumped. I didn’t manage to get any photos but it was too cute to see the kids high fiving each other and really being supportive. Loved it.

The white team (MB’s team) ended up wining 5-0 and she loved it all.

Now TB and I have gotten some more breathable chairs in hopes that will keep the sweat down next weekend….that and hopefully temps below the 100’s.

Ice cream and Friends

Posted on September 20, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , |

What a Saturday.

I started off on a 4mile hike with my neighbor. I have decided there is no better way to start the day. Get up a little early. The house is quiet, everyone is sleeping. Enjoying a breakfast bar and check some email. Then head out for a hike (or a run) in the quiet still of the morning.

By the time I get back to the house I am ready to be greeted with hugs and start the day.

Well the only challenge this weekend was I had forgotten a couple of things on the schedule.

So I came in had time for a glass of water and it was out for a quick breakfast bagel then off to the PGA store.

TB and MB did a golf clinic and while it was a little long-winded for kids it got MB geared up for the golf season.

A quick change in the car and we were off to the soccer field. Our first game of the season…it deserves it’s own post. Fun but HOT.

Then we headed out for lunch then home to go swimming and catching up on football.

After our swimming and hot-tub time we headed over to DQ to celebrate her first game and goal.

Then the neighborhood strikes again.

We saw one of the kids from her class. It was so cute they gave each other big hugs and then chatted up over ice cream. We met more parents and made plans for a playdate and I believe a golf date for the boys.

I swear it never fails….we always run into someone she knows and I was just thankful I had semi brushed my hair before we headed out.

Must remember to dress like I might meet someone MB knows. Thank goodness she doesn’t pay attention to how I dress close enough to be embarrassed…but come on, it was a long day, right after swimming, and I just wanted to be comfy 🙂

When I grow up

Posted on September 18, 2010. Filed under: What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , |

Well we had our first when I grow up conversation. And not a bad first career choice.

MB has decided she wants to be a teacher. She has given it quite a bit of thought.

She has first decided that she will not be getting married.

She wants to be Ms. MB when she is a teacher and therefore will not be getting married so she doesn’t have to change her name.

I choose not to explain to her at this time that she doesn’t have to change her name if she doesn’t want to.

When I asked her if she knew what grade she wanted to teach she said yes she was going to teach 1st Grade.

Why? I asked.

She explained that Kinders were too new and learning how to be away from their parents and what school was all about. By first grade they knew what was up and had the routine down so it would be better to teach 1st graders than Kinders.

I had to laugh.

Guess it is obvious to the Kinders too that they are “adjusting”

I figure it is a compliment to Mr. Kinder that he is able to handle their adjusting. That and the fact that she says she is thankful for him every night during her prayers and comes off the bus smiling every day.

I hear parents complaining that there isn’t enough structure in the classroom…but I think whatever Mr. Kinder is doing is just right. MB loves school, looks forward to it every day- and while it is only the first month I can’t think of a better way to start the very long school career ahead.

Making the bed like a princess

Posted on September 17, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

So today I went in to help MB make her bed. Part of her daily chores that I must say she is doing really well without much pushing. As I went to help her she yelled at me to stop. I was a little taken back till she informed me that I wasn’t doing it right. I guess she had TB had discussed the proper way to make the bed for a princess and I was no longer qualified to help. My heart is not broken by this discovery…but over filled with love for my lovebugs and their bed made for a princess!

Rockstar in first class

Oh boy she is going to be so spoiled when she has to start paying for her own travel.

I know she has years to go, but for now she is traveling under my status.

Which means upgrades. And MB loves first class. That dry chicken breast that we all complain about. For her it is like the perfect meal. Chicken and dessert. Oh yeah she thinks the food on the airplane rocks.

She gets her share of dirty looks. Ok maybe I have done it before too. As you walk back to coach and are sad you didn’t get your upgrade you see this little one in a seat and go “why is that kid in first class and I am going to have to keep my knees in my chest in the back of the bus”. Oh well. You also get the looks from the fellow first classers- “hope this child is well-behaved. I don’t want to have screaming child kicking my seat in first class and ruining my buzz”. No worries she has this travel thing down.

So we are up in the air. Dinner done. Movie done. Time for some tunes.

I have the splitter in the touch so am listening along. She find’s her own playlist and is jamming out. Well this she starts busting a move. I can’t stop laughing. My little 5-year-old, sitting in first class, wearing the bose headphones, and making moves like a rapper. Just like any other rockstar in First class I guess.

Now we just have to work on her lip syncing. I don’t think the other flyers appreciated hearing her bust out Taio Cruz with Break Your Heart or Beyoncé with Single Ladies.

I have to laugh as I think to the future when she flies solo.

What is her seat mate going to think? MUZZLE maybe?

Food induced memories

Mac and cheese

We were sitting down at the table for a dinner of mac and cheese, peas, and melon.

MB turns to me and says I miss Adam.

Adam was the owner of our favorite restaurant in NY and a good friend of ours there. MB loved to go to Adam’s as he always had hidden coloring books for her and made her a very special (yummy even for me) mac and cheese.

We used to go there at least once a week and MB was never shy of asking the hostess for Adam. Having me text him. Or looking for him herself. When she saw him she would give him the biggest bear hug ever. It was MB’s Cheers. She knew everyone and always felt special. I loved how she considered that her place. Made for some great memories and meals out.

One time we went from brunch together and stayed for hours listening to the band, coloring on the brown paper tablemats, and just enjoying each other.

Ahh food-induced memories. She does have my DNA.

I remember so many places and things by the food.

Always growing up there was excitement about going to this city or that city by the food we were going to eat.

It might be just mac and cheese, but it is the start of many more food memories to come.

Love you Adam!

What is your favorite food memory???

Breakfast in Bed= More Energy

Posted on September 11, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , |

I don’t know where she got the idea. Though I think it might be from a commercial on Disney.

MB had decided she was going to make me breakfast in bed.

So I was told I must stay in bed.

Which I did.

We made it easy on her and there were doughnuts to pass out.

She took our order and one by one she brought them in on napkins.

She of course saved the chocolate one for herself.

She was smart enough to know not to climb in bed with hers.

She stood and ate it. Before she was finished I believe TB was up with the vacuum and was busy vacuuming on and off for the next 15min.

As I am eating, and starting to become more alert. I realize she had taken a long time in the kitchen to just get 3 doughnuts.

I turned to her and said ‘did you make a mess in the kitchen?”

She grins.

I sigh.

She says “but Mommy, when you get breakfast in bed you have more energy to clean up my mess”

What can you say to that.

I said nothing.

I gave her a super big hug.

Went about the day with smiles.

And let TB clean up the mess 🙂

She was right I do have more energy. And am thankful she didn’t try to make a healthier breakfast.

Going to the nursery

Posted on September 9, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , |

I keep laughing at MB. She doesn’t find it amusing.

It started when she got off the bus and had lost her first tooth. She told me she had to go to the nursery when her tooth was about to fall out. I waited a minute and said oh you mean the Nurse’s office. Yea, yeah, whatever was the response. We were talking about her first lost tooth- who cares about grammar and the right terminology.

Well as she retold the story again and I again she kept calling it the nursery. I kept giggling. She would glare at me. What did the babies say? She looks at me like I am nuts. Well MB babies are in the nursery. When I am sick or lose a tooth I would go see a nurse not a baby, how about you? Again not amused. But I was.

Last night it happened again. MB was sharing a story. Not a real story. A story that she was making up. Like what if this happened at school kind of story. Someone got hurt and had to go to the nursery.

Oh boy those babies are really good at taking care of hurt kids. Oh, mom, you know what I mean. I said not really. She corrects herself.

Now I sit back and reflect and it still makes me giggle. It reminds me when she used to call the elevator the alligator. Or when she called magazines, maaagaasines. I love those little mis-words.

I know it is my job to correct and teach her the right word, but I must admit I am going to miss when she stops going to the nursery.
