Monsoons in Arizona

Posted on October 27, 2010. Filed under: The places we have been | Tags: , , , , , , |

So we have plenty of sun filled days in Arizona. Lots and lots.

However when the rain comes it comes in like a Lion.

Monsoons.

I didn’t know what to expect, but I have to say I was really impressed.

After months of months of the same beautiful sunny weather.

TB and I were mesmerized with the first big monsoon headed our way.

Yes we sat outside for over an hour watching the storm approach and the rain come down.

I laughed at us going I can understand why their our storm chasers.

We had seen our share of the lightning storms.

We had heard the stories of the monsoons.

But this was our first experience.

Huge pieces of hail falling from the sky. Causing thousands and thousands of damage to cars all around. Fortunately ours were in the garage.

Just crazy intense rain.

TB thought ahead and moved out our grill so it could get cleaned. Worked wonders.

I always love a good rainstorm, but this was just spectacular.

Monsoon season is done for the year, but looking forward to a more active season next year!

For now bring on more sun and the wonderful fall and winter weather!

Soccer Saturday

Posted on October 8, 2010. Filed under: Capture the moment, Good Finds, Me, Myself, and I | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

MB is just loving her soccer team. I am really happy we decided to ease into it. Her team only meets one hour on Saturday. 40 min of practice and drills and then a 20min game. It is just what she needs to learn the basics, build confidence, and score a few little goals. It also is great for our schedule. With gymnastics, swimming, and girls scouts, I was ready for the full time commitment of 2 practices a week and Saturday games. We are going to have to drop one other sport when we go to that.

This week MB won the sportsmanship award for the week. She was so excited as you can tell from the photo!!!

TB and I were excited too…finally the temps were below 100 degrees. We didn’t get eaten by fire ants watching the practice and our new breathable REI chairs arrived…so when I got up to cheer I didn’t have what can only be summarized as soggy pants. Much to TB’s disappointment he will have to find something else to tease me about…these chairs rock! I am looking forward to the rest of the season which much cooler weather.

I just love this photo too….it took me a while at looking at it to realize what it was. It’s the blue skies. The skies in AZ are so bright and so blue and it is like this almost every day. I love it!!!!! Thinking about the doom and gloom about to hit Syracuse I am so excited to be where we are for the winter. I have already forgotten the miserable heat of August.

Preparing for the winter visitors

Posted on September 30, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I | Tags: , , , , , , |

We prioritized our house project list and then it was time to start plugging away.

This week has been a whirlwind of multiple furniture shop stops…a little online browsing and I am happy to report 2 successes.

Tomorrow our patio viewing deck furniture arrives along with our new entertainment center. Yeah.

Just in time for our first guests of the season.

I am so happy to finally have moved someplace that everyone wants to come visit. I guess my shining personality wasn’t enough..but the wonderful winters in AZ are bringing people in full force and I am looking forward to another busy season.

Now the next question…do we do the grill install next or finish up the bathroom plumbing. Decisions, decisions.

Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall

Posted on September 27, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , |

How cute is this.

Last night we are getting ready for bed and MB is cleaning up her room. I hear her singing softly “Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall”

I stop her and say what are you singing. She smiles and sings a little louder:

Winter, Spring, summer or fall
All you got to do is call
And I’ll be there
you’ve got a friend?

I smile and ask her where she learned that. She said Mr. Kinder taught me.

Then I got the newsletter. They are starting to study the seasons.

So Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall. How cute is that?

Just another reason I love Mr. Kinder.

Teaching my daughter James Taylor and the seasons all at once.

Ahh….the year is just getting better and better.

Now off to find photos of MB in the snow to send to Mr. Kinder– to show the other AZ kids who have never seen a NY WINTER!

She might be girly…but she enjoys sports too! Hard not to with her gene pool.

End of summer fun, enjoying a Diamondbacks game.

What is out the window?

Posted on August 29, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

We are still adjusting to the AZ summer.

I have to admit the monsoons are really cool.

The light shows are outstanding.

Seeing the columns of rain around the valley are picturesque.

The smell of rain is just perfect.

All things I love about the monsoons. The humidity it brings I could do without.

Today’s monsoon was really special.

MB and I were driving to Chick-fil-A for kid’s night. As we drive we noticed if you look out one window it was dark, lightening, and you could see the rain. Out the other window was the blue sky.

As we pulled into the Chick-fil-A parking lot I turned to MB. Look- Chick-fil-A is in the middle. It was seriously like the separation of the storm went right down the middle of the building. It was like a line drawn in the sky between storm and blue skies.

MB and I marveled at it for a moment and then went in for dinner and 50 cent make your own sundaes. TB she wanted to make one for you with 3 scoops of oreos…so you are missed!

As we are eating dinner I look out the window and it was pouring. I say something to MB…she goes no it’s not. I look out the other window and she is right no rain. Now this Chick-fil-A is not bigger than normal. It is a normal sized joint….but seroiusly for 15min rain was pouring down on one side and there wasn’t a drop on the other side.

It was pretty crazy to watch cars go through the drive thru. Wipers on as they entered, off as they exited.

Made for some interesting weather conversation.

What will AZ storms have in store for us next.

Take me out to the ballgame

Arizona Diamondbacks 9, Los Angeles Dodgers 4,...

Image by Ken Lund via Flickr

Thanks to AZ on the Rocks (a great indoor climbing place with the best summer/spring camp according to MB!) we got 3 tickets to the Diamondback game this past weekend.

Everyone was excited to get out and get in one last game, before we begin the countdown to FOOTBALL season. There are 2 adults in this house that are ready for some football.

5 and 3/4 (as MB tells it) is a great age for going to games. She is interested in learning about the sport. What base are they on? How fast does he pitch? what is the score? who is hitting? Lots of lots of questions…but she is learning and remembering the answers so it is all good.

Even more fun is the big screen and the cheers. She doesn’t miss a clapping opportunity and would laugh at me if I did. We got a big kick out of the kiss cam, though she didn’t want us to kiss if they got us on…”that would be embarrassing”. Ahh I thought I had a few more years before I started to embarrass her, guess not.

Of course a trip to the ballpark wasn’t complete without a treat. Surprisingly, she skipped ice cream this time for shaved ice and after about 10min of re-arranging herself in her seat she got the perfect position for eating shaved ice and TB an I were blessed with 20min of no chatter….at least not from our little dugout.

Winners all around…and the Diamondbacks too! The show wasn’t over yet…the ride home we got to see another amazing monsoon lightening storm…they just keep getting better.

AZ is a changing us

Posted on August 22, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

It dawned on me this morning that Scottsdale is making it’s mark.

Last night I had a thought of MB and I riding down to Starbucks in the morning. She could ride her bike and I could run/walk with her. It is about 2 miles each way…and full of rolling hills. TB thought I was crazy. MB wasn’t so sure. So I said ok we can just drive.

Well this morning around 7am, MB woke me up and asked when we were going on our ride to Starbucks. I asked her if she was sure she wanted to ride her bike, or if she wanted to drive. She said no lets ride, we can take it easy if we need to.

So we got ourselves dressed and off we went. First off, we are up, dressed, and out the door by 7:30? Really..previously I would have been in my PJ’s for at least another hour. But we had to do this early if we didn’t want it to be hot.

The ride was great on the way there. A few times I heard her saying “I think I can, I think I can” as we went up the hills. Every few minutes she would point to a bird, bunny, or other creature on the path. We waved and said good morning to the various bikers and walkers. Happy happy calms we were. Oh I forgot MB had her camelback on and was keeping hydrated.

We ended up skipping Starbucks and hitting up the AJ’s bakery. Fruit salad to share and muffins for us both. We ate outside and enjoyed the morning.

Now the ride back wasn’t all happy. There was a little whining and a little I can’t do this, my legs are so tired. But we pressed on and we made it. She did awesome, I felt great having had my morning workout…and we both had enough fun that she wants to go back next weekend. Plus she added that we could do it one evening for dinner too.

I must admit that riding/running 4 miles first thing in the morning was not my previous norm. I would of never even thought of that as a way to start/spend the weekend. Things are a changing…and I like it. Love it even more that it’s not just me but the whole family!

First Horseback Riding Lesson

Posted on August 21, 2010. Filed under: Capture the moment, Good Finds | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Well thanks to a great Groupon deal I signed up MB for her first horseback riding lesson at Bein Performance Horses.

What a treat!!! It was a 90min lesson and I was really surprised and excited to see that the lesson included taking care of the horse. Everything from getting it from the stable, grooming it, preparing the hooves, and on and on! MB got a horse names Brownie..very fitting and he was a perfect little BIG horse. MB learned all the parts of the horse and all the names of the brushes. She did great listening and only a couple times had to be reminded not to go around the back of the horse!

We took the lesson early to avoid the heat…but it was still a hot morning. Not that she would care…she wanted to stay and ride another horse after we done…couldn’t get enough. The trainers were just awesome and patient and I loved the system of teaching balance and comfort with the horse. She rode bareback and had to do lots of exercises working on her balance. She did great! Just another cool thing AZ has to offer.

The whole ride home she kept asking if she could go back tomorrow….I wonder how long we will hold out 🙂

I got the perfect shirt from Smitten & Company I can’t wait to get another one for Halloween…and this one is going to last us quite a few more lessons. Love it….and of course it is orange!

Can’t swim- who me?

Swim Lanes

As I sit at swim lessons tonight and watch MB cupping her hands and rotating her arms with a decent looking freestyle and a strong kick I am amazed.

Now MB has always loved the water and we did lessons now and again in OH and NY since she was 6mths old. However, other than water awareness and comfort we weren’t really swimming in the start of 2010.

When we moved to AZ and got a pool the first thing I did was sign her up for swim lessons. That was a little less than 6mths ago. I was first amazed that after 2 weeks of lessons (30min/week) she was able to make it from one end of the pool to the other and one way or another would get herself to the bottom.

We definitely spend more and more time in the pool now and have progressed to handstands and diving between your legs. Her kick is getting stronger and just this weekend in Havasu with a push on the bottom was able to make it to the bottom of the 9ft pool. She likes to sit on the bottom with TB and pretend to talk….so just a little fish.

While proud of all those little steps, nothing surprised me more than seeing her doing a lap of an actual stroke. It is just amazing to me how in 6 months, going 30/week, she has picked this up. We don’t practice tons at home, if I can get her to do it once a week outside of her lesson I am lucky.

I have to give AquaSafe the credit…a great setup, all of our coaches have been awesome, and she just loves going- especially now that she has a girl coach for the first time.

MB is proud of herself too…after we showered off and changed clothes. I told her how great she looked with her strokes. She gets this big grin on her face, she knows she is doing well, and just says “thanks, Mom” and off we go.

Now since I am talking about swimming…anyone have a thought on what age you stop stripping your child down in the public open co-ed shower? MB showers off with her suit on, I figure one night a week that can work as shower clean…but I have to admit I am a little amazed at the age of some of the naked ones running around?? Am I the weird one????
