Ice cream and Friends

What a Saturday.

I started off on a 4mile hike with my neighbor. I have decided there is no better way to start the day. Get up a little early. The house is quiet, everyone is sleeping. Enjoying a breakfast bar and check some email. Then head out for a hike (or a run) in the quiet still of the morning.

By the time I get back to the house I am ready to be greeted with hugs and start the day.

Well the only challenge this weekend was I had forgotten a couple of things on the schedule.

So I came in had time for a glass of water and it was out for a quick breakfast bagel then off to the PGA store.

TB and MB did a golf clinic and while it was a little long-winded for kids it got MB geared up for the golf season.

A quick change in the car and we were off to the soccer field. Our first game of the season…it deserves it’s own post. Fun but HOT.

Then we headed out for lunch then home to go swimming and catching up on football.

After our swimming and hot-tub time we headed over to DQ to celebrate her first game and goal.

Then the neighborhood strikes again.

We saw one of the kids from her class. It was so cute they gave each other big hugs and then chatted up over ice cream. We met more parents and made plans for a playdate and I believe a golf date for the boys.

I swear it never fails….we always run into someone she knows and I was just thankful I had semi brushed my hair before we headed out.

Must remember to dress like I might meet someone MB knows. Thank goodness she doesn’t pay attention to how I dress close enough to be embarrassed…but come on, it was a long day, right after swimming, and I just wanted to be comfy 🙂

Wow I feel like a “Mother” now

Posted on September 15, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I | Tags: , , , , , , , |

This past weekend I was attending a birthday party of a 1-year-old.

It was a friend of a friend I was visiting.

It was a great low-key party with some great people.

The birthday boy was sitting in his high chair and enjoying some pieces of hamburger.

Mom is in the kitchen making sure all the guests are getting their food. Aunt and Grandma are busy feeding the birthday boy.

I am chatting with friends in the room with the birthday boy.

The Aunt starts screaming “he is choking, he is choking.”

“Mom, Mom- he is choking”

I look over and his face is getting red.

Grandma comes up and starts to pat his back but he is turning redder and his eyes are watering. There is no sound from his mouth.

With wine glass in hand I move from where I am standing and stick my finger in his mouth had do a sweep. The burger bites come out. Birthday boy screams are heard for a second the he calms. I go to the kitchen to wash my hand.

My friend and others were freaking out, you just saved his life. OMG. OMG.

I was un-phased.

That was when I realized I really am a MOM. I know it has been almost 6 years, but this was the moment for me.

I wasn’t stressed. I wasn’t freaked out. It was just a natural reaction. I didn’t even put my wine glass down.

That gut instinct of what to do with the calmness knowing that it was all going to be ok.

Now I don’t need any pats on the back and I don’t really think in my head that I saved his life. I just cleared his mouth. Though I am thankful I did…and the party went back on and fortunately it was low-key enough we didn’t have to stress out the mom too much.  The biggest thing for me is I realize I am a MOM-MOM.

Refreshed…a great girls weekend

Posted on September 13, 2010. Filed under: Circle of Friends, Me, Myself, and I | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Nothing beats family time…and I cherish every minute.

But there is something to be said for getting away for a day or two.

I was able to get away this past weekend and how wonderful it was.

I headed east to Kentucky. So on top of visiting 2 of my best friends. Yep, lucky me they are married! I got to get a little southern charm.

The weather was just awesome. 70’s. Sunny. Clear Skies.

Combine that with wine, long walks, good food, and good chats. I was so refreshed and thankful for everything I am blessed with.

The past few visits have been full of venting, talking about the crap in my life, and the dark cloud had just always hung around.

That is a thing of the past. What a difference it made. It was just wonderful. No black clouds. Nothing to really bitch about. Just shows how talking negative can make you feel negative. Talking positive leads to being positive.

About the only downer was leaving and realizing it was going to be awhile till I saw them again. Friends know no distance, but it sure would be nice to have them around for more weekly dinners, walks, and wine.

Oh and I have to mention I was reminded how the little touches for guests can make you smile. There was a note on my bed, flowers in my room, and she even turned down my bed one night. Oh yeah over the top. I must remember flowers in the room when we have company. They made me smile all weekend.

What little touches do you do when you have company?? (I am not afraid to steal them!!!)

Food induced memories

Mac and cheese

We were sitting down at the table for a dinner of mac and cheese, peas, and melon.

MB turns to me and says I miss Adam.

Adam was the owner of our favorite restaurant in NY and a good friend of ours there. MB loved to go to Adam’s as he always had hidden coloring books for her and made her a very special (yummy even for me) mac and cheese.

We used to go there at least once a week and MB was never shy of asking the hostess for Adam. Having me text him. Or looking for him herself. When she saw him she would give him the biggest bear hug ever. It was MB’s Cheers. She knew everyone and always felt special. I loved how she considered that her place. Made for some great memories and meals out.

One time we went from brunch together and stayed for hours listening to the band, coloring on the brown paper tablemats, and just enjoying each other.

Ahh food-induced memories. She does have my DNA.

I remember so many places and things by the food.

Always growing up there was excitement about going to this city or that city by the food we were going to eat.

It might be just mac and cheese, but it is the start of many more food memories to come.

Love you Adam!

What is your favorite food memory???

Lets give thanks for friends

Ok so first a confession.

I have fallen short in the prayer department. I don’t know how it happened, it just used to be part of the routine. Yet somehow we fell out of sync and forgot to do evening prayers.

Well tonight I remembered that we had been missing something so after a really long story we said our prayers. We ended it with saying 3 things we are thankful for.

MB’s were

1) Happiness

2) Friends

3) she looked at me and I said the beautiful weather we got to enjoy today.

MB then added a few other thoughts on other things she was thankful for and we talked about God for a bit. MB wanted to make the point that God, even though we couldn’t see him, was always there and alive with us.

Heart melting.

I will not forget prayers in the future.

What a sweet moment to wrap up just a wonderful day with my little family.

Now to tackle the next item on my to-do list, finding us a new church. The last step in getting us settled in.

Green, Green, Everywhere

Posted on August 31, 2010. Filed under: What she said | Tags: , , , , , , |

So this week we are studying the colors of the rainbow. We have had some fun activities wearing different colors, bringing in different items. I am loving Mr. Kinder.

Yet today we were seeing Green everywhere. It has become a joke at home that MB knows everybody. Since everywhere we go she always runs into someone she knows from school, gymnastics, ….. it is pretty standard to be at dinner and hear “hey, I know her/him…they go to X. Can I go say hi”

Well today was no exception. Yet it wasn’t even like we were just down the block in our neighborhood where everyone lives. And it was wear Green day to school.

First we go to the movie theater and sure enough there is another girl in dressed in Green going to the same movie we were. They visited awhile, but the other girl was with other friends so they parted ways and MB and I went to go find our seats.

Second in a random stop at Barnes and Noble. And not even the Barnes and Noble near our house or the other one I sometimes go to. As we walk to the kids section MB spots another kid from her class. She basically chases her down Green on Green as they were leaving…so she could say hi and bye.

So the legend lives on. Less than a year in Scottsdale and MB knows everyone, everywhere. LOL

When it’s hot…go where it is hotter

Posted on August 16, 2010. Filed under: Capture the moment, Circle of Friends, The places we have been | Tags: , , , , , , |

So we had planned a weekend getaway to visit friends. Something we were all looking forward to. MB to make new friends, TB and I to get away from work and home projects and just enjoy the weekend.

It was a hot week for us in Scottsdale 110 degrees most days so in my mind I was looking forward to going to Lake Havasu for some cooler weather. Right, cause Lake means cool doesn’t it? Well in my warped mind it did. That was too Thursday night when TB and I looked at the temps and I saw that it was 10 degrees hotter in Havasu. WHAT??????

Turns out its more in the desert than we are. Whoops.

Oh well…even turning up the heat won’t get this girl down.

We had a great time…bowling, playing in the pool, visiting, and just being. It felt so good not to have anything to do, nowhere to be, and just let the weekend happen.

Now refreshed and ready for the week ahead…well sorta 🙂

Meet the teacher

Posted on August 8, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

I am playing a little catch-up. As I expected, it has been an extremely busy weekend. Friday morning we went to the school’s Meet the Teacher event. They told us to bring in the school supplies with no names. I am so happy we ordered from the school directly- no shopping lists, no making sure I got everything. Paypal and pick-up. Shortcut.

When we got to the classroom Mr. Kindergarten had bins outside labeled for each of the supplies. So while I dug in my purse for my camera TB and MB unloaded our bag into all the right bins.

Notice the water bottle in hand. This girl has hydration down…so we have had to add a “try” bathroom stop on the list when we are out and about. If we see a bathroom we are going to try. So much better than the panicked “I have to go I have to go” in the middle of a store with no potty.

We then headed into the classroom and found her desk. She wouldn’t sit in it and got all shy again. As we meet other parents and kids it was funny to see all the kids holding their parent’s hands tight or standing behind their legs. Each parent would say “what is your name?” and there would be silence…finally you might get the answer in the softest tone you could imagine. I give it a day and the next time we go to the classroom it will be a zoo.

Before we left I went through the bus drop off routine one more time with her to make sure she got it. She played it back to me and I thought we were all good. As we got in the car she told me she was nervous about taking the bus. She had mentioned this earlier– which is why we went through the routine a couple of times. I asked if she remembered what we talked about…and she said in an exasperated tone “I remember that mommy, we did it enough, but who am I going to sit with on the bus. What if nobody sits with me??”

All this time I thought she was worried about where to go…whoops. I smiled at her and held her hand and said I am sure she would find someone fun to sit with and remember you aren’t getting on the bus alone- you will have all your friends from the neighborhood with you too. You could see the temporary sigh of relief come across her face when she realized she could start targeting a seat companion as soon as she got back home.

The weekend is over????

Posted on August 1, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Where did the weekend go?

Honestly I don’t know what happened one minute it was here the next minute it was gone. At least I feel accomplished.

After sleeping in for the last  morning, last day to enjoy the luxury, we headed to yoga. I love yoga. I love how I feel when it is done. I am amazed about how much deeper the stretches can get. What a great way to start the day.

Then we went to Lowes. What started as a trip for some eye hooks and rope ended up with 4 hands full of supplies to get our guest room into “final shape”

The next thing we know it is 3pm and we have friends coming over for a BBQ at 5. So hurried out to the store and got our BBQ supplies.

Then we both went to work. Me in the kitchen. Bob Villa in the guest room. We were both successful. The picture is hung, the dresser is fixed and the room is looking complete. I whipped up my mom’s pasta salad..I didn’t realize I missed it till I made it…loved feta cheese and the Mediterranean dressing. Threw a few chocolate chip cookies in the oven for dessert and the doorbell rang.

Talk about perfect team work! We are so getting settled into our place and it feels so good.

Go to admit  nothing beats relaxing Sunday night in the hot tub.

Now the week before Kindergarten begins…going to find out the teacher tomorrow. Eck!!!

Way Back Wednesday

Posted on July 28, 2010. Filed under: Way Back Wednesday | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

How did I think I could be wordless on Wednesday when the house is empty. Silly me. Have you noticed my blog is out my outlet for lack of human contact…a small downside of working from home.

Anyway as I was reading one of the blogs I follow I see this Way Back Wednesday theme and thought it sounded fun.

The topic of the day was your first job?

I started thinking…which job was really my first. Does babysitting count. I had 2 regular after-school babysitting jobs before I could legally work. Or was it data entry for a hotel putting in all the client info…you know those registration cards you would fill out before everything was online. Yep I sat there and typed in card after card for a hotel.

But to be fair I would say my first real true that carried me through all of high-school was working at the local ice cream/bakery/sandwich shop. I grew up in this small little beach town. It was a great place to grow-up. So spoiled. We had the beach, we had the river, everyone pretty much knew everyone (that can be good and bad :)), it was the kind of place where the streets rolled up at 6pm. And here I was working in one of 2 ice cream shoppes on the beach.

They hired pretty much all high-school girls. So every night there would be 2-3 girls working. It was busy from 3-6 and then again at like 8-10 when we closed.  So between 6-8 we would sit back on the cooler and doing our homework. Sometimes when we would get bored we would play taste test games with the ice cream…making up all different combos. It didn’t take long till my favorite treat was vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles on a cake cone….that was after trying every ice cream and cookie in the store (thank goodness for crazy swim team practices!)

I remember when my mom would pick me up I would always have to have a treat in hand. As otherwise she would have to drive home 20min with me the “waffle cone scented” teenager. Could you imagine the torture. I always smelled sweet.

The job got even sweeter when this incredible high-end restaurant opened up across the street and a group of surfers I knew started working their. So the swap began. We would trade ice cream for dinner. And the food was delicious. Mahi-mahi, lobster pasta….so worth a milkshake!

So I couldn’t have had a better job..loved my co-workers. Loved my hours. Got to get homework done. Friends would always come visit and keep me company on those really slow nights. Everyone is always happy when getting ice cream so other than a few complaints on the size of the cone…either to big or to small everyone was all smiles!
