What do you wear to make bath salts?

Posted on October 23, 2010. Filed under: What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , |

Nana is in town. We are finishing up prep for the upcoming birthday bash.

So the next up activity was making MB’s bath salts.

We get MB at the bus stop.

We come home and it time to start working on the salts.

MB disappears to go to the rest room and change.

Out she appears in a tutu. Yep her shirt from school, I love soccer undies, and a bright orange tutu.

She climbs up on her stool and says “ok, Nana, I am ready”

Now I know that tutus are the fitting outfit for making bath salts. I was completely under-dressed.

Even better our lovely neighbor stopped by to say hi and asked MB if she had just home from dance. MB with a straight-faced said no she was making bath salts. A mother of a boy with a baby girl on the way she looked throughly perplexed. Just a matter of time till it makes sense to her too.

Bath salts and tutus. As perfect as peanut butter and chocolate.

I know a lot of things

Posted on October 22, 2010. Filed under: What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Gotta love this. I was exchanging emails with MB’s teacher today and his final note shared a little bit of my MB.

I was doing kinder assessments with MB and I complimented her on her correct answers to the questions and MB said, “I know a lot of things.”

That sums our girl up.

In the lead or control.

Swears she knows more than anyone else.

Absorbs everything she can possibly from conversations, surroundings, life.

Funny how those 6 little words just bring to vision our little girl in a nutshell.

It was good for a laugh or too around the dinner table as well.

She cut it

Posted on October 12, 2010. Filed under: What she said | Tags: , , , , , |

Her best friends have short hair and one just got it cut so MB wanted to join the crowd. I was happy to oblige. Her hair is thin and while I love doing braids and pony tails it starts to look pretty shaggy at the ends. So we went to Sweet and Sassy and she took 4 inches off. The original plan was 2.5 inches.

It looks great. She loves it and TB and I love it. Win. Win.

As we drove home from getting it cut I looked back in the mirror and she had a sad face. I asked her what was wrong.

She looks at me very serious and says. I love my short hair, but I miss my hair- it is all gone.

I asked if she was sad she cut it. She said no.

“I love my new hair, it is just all gone”

I smiled and told her that I loved it too and that was the great thing about hair. It grows back. So you can cut it short then let it grow long again till you want to cut it.

She smiled and the subject changed.

In the back of my mind I thought what a grown up moment. How many times had I cut my hair and then while I loved the new look missed the hair that had just been left on the salon floor.

2 days later the thought of that long hair is long gone..she is working the new do!

Sometimes going away is a good thing

Posted on September 22, 2010. Filed under: What he said, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I hate leaving my family. No matter what fun might lie ahead I always miss them. You might have a night or a part of time when you enjoy being a girl on the town, but at the end of the night it is always so much better to be under your own roof when the family all there with you.

However, without going away I wouldn’t feel so much love as I do right now.

I am sitting in a meeting and my phone vibrates. I look down and there is a picture of my two lovebugs beaming at the camera. All smiles which makes me smile. Then I notice the splash pad behind them and a backdrop I don’t recognize. They are someplace new….I of course want all the details but I am in a meeting.

I come back to my hotel and see some Facebook updates from TB…here they are:

‎”I think this might be a good day to smell the breeze, look around, and just have some fun.” 🙂

“I want surf champion for dinner; I want surf champion”. Took me a minute to realize she meant surf and turf. I corrected her, and she was all, “Yeah, THAT’S what I mean”.
Check that. I guess it was “surf boarding champion” she was saying. She just reverted back to that, followed by PLEASE I want some lobster.
I just smile and my heart melts. I wish I was there with them…but then I know it would have been just a normal Monday night. They are making their own memories, they are doing what best buddies too.
Sometimes going away is a good thing…

Making the bed like a princess

Posted on September 17, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

So today I went in to help MB make her bed. Part of her daily chores that I must say she is doing really well without much pushing. As I went to help her she yelled at me to stop. I was a little taken back till she informed me that I wasn’t doing it right. I guess she had TB had discussed the proper way to make the bed for a princess and I was no longer qualified to help. My heart is not broken by this discovery…but over filled with love for my lovebugs and their bed made for a princess!

Rockstar in first class

Posted on September 14, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , |

Oh boy she is going to be so spoiled when she has to start paying for her own travel.

I know she has years to go, but for now she is traveling under my status.

Which means upgrades. And MB loves first class. That dry chicken breast that we all complain about. For her it is like the perfect meal. Chicken and dessert. Oh yeah she thinks the food on the airplane rocks.

She gets her share of dirty looks. Ok maybe I have done it before too. As you walk back to coach and are sad you didn’t get your upgrade you see this little one in a seat and go “why is that kid in first class and I am going to have to keep my knees in my chest in the back of the bus”. Oh well. You also get the looks from the fellow first classers- “hope this child is well-behaved. I don’t want to have screaming child kicking my seat in first class and ruining my buzz”. No worries she has this travel thing down.

So we are up in the air. Dinner done. Movie done. Time for some tunes.

I have the splitter in the touch so am listening along. She find’s her own playlist and is jamming out. Well this she starts busting a move. I can’t stop laughing. My little 5-year-old, sitting in first class, wearing the bose headphones, and making moves like a rapper. Just like any other rockstar in First class I guess.

Now we just have to work on her lip syncing. I don’t think the other flyers appreciated hearing her bust out Taio Cruz with Break Your Heart or Beyoncé with Single Ladies.

I have to laugh as I think to the future when she flies solo.

What is her seat mate going to think? MUZZLE maybe?

Food induced memories

Mac and cheese

We were sitting down at the table for a dinner of mac and cheese, peas, and melon.

MB turns to me and says I miss Adam.

Adam was the owner of our favorite restaurant in NY and a good friend of ours there. MB loved to go to Adam’s as he always had hidden coloring books for her and made her a very special (yummy even for me) mac and cheese.

We used to go there at least once a week and MB was never shy of asking the hostess for Adam. Having me text him. Or looking for him herself. When she saw him she would give him the biggest bear hug ever. It was MB’s Cheers. She knew everyone and always felt special. I loved how she considered that her place. Made for some great memories and meals out.

One time we went from brunch together and stayed for hours listening to the band, coloring on the brown paper tablemats, and just enjoying each other.

Ahh food-induced memories. She does have my DNA.

I remember so many places and things by the food.

Always growing up there was excitement about going to this city or that city by the food we were going to eat.

It might be just mac and cheese, but it is the start of many more food memories to come.

Love you Adam!

What is your favorite food memory???

Breakfast in Bed= More Energy

Posted on September 11, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What she said | Tags: , , , , , , , |

I don’t know where she got the idea. Though I think it might be from a commercial on Disney.

MB had decided she was going to make me breakfast in bed.

So I was told I must stay in bed.

Which I did.

We made it easy on her and there were doughnuts to pass out.

She took our order and one by one she brought them in on napkins.

She of course saved the chocolate one for herself.

She was smart enough to know not to climb in bed with hers.

She stood and ate it. Before she was finished I believe TB was up with the vacuum and was busy vacuuming on and off for the next 15min.

As I am eating, and starting to become more alert. I realize she had taken a long time in the kitchen to just get 3 doughnuts.

I turned to her and said ‘did you make a mess in the kitchen?”

She grins.

I sigh.

She says “but Mommy, when you get breakfast in bed you have more energy to clean up my mess”

What can you say to that.

I said nothing.

I gave her a super big hug.

Went about the day with smiles.

And let TB clean up the mess 🙂

She was right I do have more energy. And am thankful she didn’t try to make a healthier breakfast.

Yellow Light

Color mark from Crayola "Yellow Green&quo...

Image via Wikipedia

Green light= good

Yellow light= warning

Red= time to talk with the teacher.

Every day MB gets the color on a card in her folder.

We have been going 2 weeks strong with just greens. We have heard Mr. Kindergarten doesn’t give out many yellows or reds, but per MB he has had to do a few reds already.

There has been a lot of movement in the classroom seating so we were a little worried Ms. Chatterbox was talking too much in class.

Then Friday we got her behavior report and it looked like we had our first yellow. I was surprised that MB didn’t tell us right away and she was a little taken back to see she had a yellow. Though quickly she had her reason for the yellow, she wasn’t listening to Mr. Kindergarten.

It turned into a minor tragedy of tears, but we talked about the lessons we learned.

1) Always telling the truth

2) Listening to our teacher

3) Knowing that no matter what we love you

Well I sent a note to the teacher just to check in and make sure we knew what caused the yellow light, so we could make sure we reinforce it at home.

Ahh guess what. MB didn’t get a yellow light. Crayola did. It was a green but was some yellow-green color from Crayola that made it look yellow.

There are 3 very very happy people in our house right now. The note said MB was doing awesome. Happy Mom. Happy TB. (Yes he was so happy he sprung the new to MB before I got a chance too!!!) Happy MB.

….untill we get our first real yellow light.

Bento box finally

Posted on September 8, 2010. Filed under: Good Finds, Me, Myself, and I | Tags: , , , , , , , |

Well the search is over.

As just after 3 weeks lunches are getting boring I have been on the lookout for a bento box so I could start getting a little more creative. And have less food come home uneaten. After searching Target, Container Store, and on and on I happened upon the prefect items at TJ Max.

We were ready for our first bento. It was a hit and this was just with leftovers. I am excited too.

MB is such an eat with your fingers girl. She is going to eat so much better this way. For example. I set out grapes, cut up strawberries she digs in. I cut up a chicken breast into bite size pieces she devours the whole thing. I leave it for her to cut herself she eats about half. Maybe it is lazy, or probably just distraction. Yet I know the bite size will be a success for the year ahead.

I also found a great blog, Bento Lunch. Everyday they post a new creation. After a few days of seeing the cute cut-out cheese slices I think I am going to have to start looking for cookie cutters. Love it.

This bento is not fancy, but it was our first! So much better than the lunchables she is always begging for too!

Anyone else bento box? What are your favorite things to put in the lunch box? Always looking for some new healthy and fun ideas!
