Just play

Earlier this week I had one of those moments that remind me sometimes you have to take the time to just play.

As a working full-time mom and with the crazy family schedule everyone has sometimes it can be hard. There is work to do, email to read, lunch to pack, laundry, activities, grocery shopping, reading everything in the green folder, watch the clock, cook dinner, get ready for bed, and on and on and on. Then repeat, repeat day after day.

So the days can just run into each other…and even on the weekends while you might play a game or hang out it still doesn’t hit the point of “just playing”.

One day afterschool I did just that. I closed up my computers. I put away the phones. I turned on the stereo and MB and I went outside to the pool. I didn’t try to relax on the raft. I just got in the water and basically did whatever she wanted. We ended up playing for a good hour- diving between each others legs, swimming from one end to the other, making up “routines” as she called them where we just did different water tricks. At the time it was just mindless and I really didn’t think anything of it. TB joined us after 45min and MB had us racing, holding our breath, and then doing an obstacle course around the pool.

After we cleaned up and I went inside to make dinner I realized how relaxed I was. It wasn’t 30min of get in the pool before the next thing. We didn’t worry about the clock, we didn’t worry about what was going on next, I didn’t think about anything on my list. I was 5 and being “best friends” with my favorite 5 year old.

There is not much better in the world than that.

So we all must remember to take time out and just play- no schedule, no intention, no purpose, just play like you are 5 and you don’t have a care or stress in the world. (more…)

Swim Lanes

As I sit at swim lessons tonight and watch MB cupping her hands and rotating her arms with a decent looking freestyle and a strong kick I am amazed.

Now MB has always loved the water and we did lessons now and again in OH and NY since she was 6mths old. However, other than water awareness and comfort we weren’t really swimming in the start of 2010.

When we moved to AZ and got a pool the first thing I did was sign her up for swim lessons. That was a little less than 6mths ago. I was first amazed that after 2 weeks of lessons (30min/week) she was able to make it from one end of the pool to the other and one way or another would get herself to the bottom.

We definitely spend more and more time in the pool now and have progressed to handstands and diving between your legs. Her kick is getting stronger and just this weekend in Havasu with a push on the bottom was able to make it to the bottom of the 9ft pool. She likes to sit on the bottom with TB and pretend to talk….so just a little fish.

While proud of all those little steps, nothing surprised me more than seeing her doing a lap of an actual stroke. It is just amazing to me how in 6 months, going 30/week, she has picked this up. We don’t practice tons at home, if I can get her to do it once a week outside of her lesson I am lucky.

I have to give AquaSafe the credit…a great setup, all of our coaches have been awesome, and she just loves going- especially now that she has a girl coach for the first time.

MB is proud of herself too…after we showered off and changed clothes. I told her how great she looked with her strokes. She gets this big grin on her face, she knows she is doing well, and just says “thanks, Mom” and off we go.

Now since I am talking about swimming…anyone have a thought on what age you stop stripping your child down in the public open co-ed shower? MB showers off with her suit on, I figure one night a week that can work as shower clean…but I have to admit I am a little amazed at the age of some of the naked ones running around?? Am I the weird one????

No Camelbacks before bed

Posted on August 10, 2010. Filed under: Me, Myself, and I, What he said | Tags: , , , , , , |

First off I need sleep. A full night of uninterrupted sleep. I haven’t had one good night in over a week. Between staying up late one night working on changing the bathroom hardware. To another night getting sucked into Avatar and then a few nights of getting up with MB I haven’t had a good long night sleep in a while. I need one.

Anyway the other night after having a sushi fest. TB wanted to go out for a family walk…get the blood moving and a little exercise. Sounded like a good idea…it had finally cooled off and someone had a little pent-up energy from no playground time. It was the first hike/walk we had done since MB got her new camelback so TB filled it up and off we went. Was a good walk…everything was good till about 2am.

So we came home and I put MB to bed after making sure she went to the potty. Sometime later in the night TB asked if I had made sure MB went potty…as he commented she drank almost all of her camelback…its about a liter so quite a bit of water. I said I did but I knew right then it probably wasn’t good enough. I thought about going to partially wake her up and go potty…but I didn’t. I should have. Why did I not say the Camelback was a bad idea….but I didn’t want to ruin their fun.

About 2am I hear my name being called from the other side of the house. Weak and weepy like. Oh boy I knew what had happened. The 3rd time in her 5 and 3/4 years of life that we have had a wet bed. Poor thing is always so upset, but no worries I stripped the bed and set her up on the couch. Sometime in the middle of the morning she moved into our bed…should I mention she sleeps like a starfish, we need a KING sized bed soon. I need a good night sleep. I need a full night of uninterrupted, no foot in my back….one night.

Fingers crossed that tonight will be that night. Meanwhile, TB learned a valuable parenting lesson. No Camelbacks before bed.
